Deputies Engage In Shootout With Armed Suspect In Miami Apartment

Miami, Florida — On August 26, 2025, just before 4 p.m., Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting shots fired and a woman injured in the area of 305 NW 72nd Avenue. The caller said a man, later identified as 50-year-old Javier Albriza Jara, was actively firing a gun and trying to shoot a woman. A neighbor recorded cell phone video of Jara’s erratic behavior before deputies arrived. The cell phone video shows Jara, armed with a handgun diving headfirst through an apartment window. Jara continued his erratic behavior and returned to the apartment where he confronted an occupant inside. Jara ran to his fourth-floor apartment and left the door open. Jara shot a 46-year-old woman in the chest and fired multiple rounds inside the apartment complex. Deputies arrived and located the woman shot by Jara. Witnesses at the scene directed them to Jara’s fourth-floor apartment. Multiple deputies approached the door. Deputy #2 was the first to approach the open door. Jara was inside, armed with a handgun.

Deputy #2 repeatedly ordered Jara to show his hands. An exchange of gunfire followed between Jara and three deputies. The view from deputy #2’s body-worn camera shows Jara retrieving a handgun from a table and attempting to load it. Deputy #2 issued multiple commands for Jara to show his hands. Jara continued to manipulate the handgun before an exchange of gunfire occurred between Jara and the deputies. Deputies took a defensive position outside the apartment and waited for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) to arrive. The SRT entered Jara’s fourth-floor apartment and found him on the floor. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Jara deceased. After being shot by Jara, the 46-year-old victim ran to a neighbor’s third-floor apartment. Deputies provided medical aid before carrying her downstairs to paramedics. She was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The father of the victim told investigators that Jara pointed a firearm at him and pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned. The victim survived her injuries. No deputies were injured during this incident.
