Crown Heights Shmira is Looking for Qualified Volunteers

As the Crown Heights community grows, local safety organization Shmira is looking for qualified volunteers to join their patrols and respond to the increasing number of calls for assistance.

As the Crown Heights community grows, local volunteer safety organization Shmira is looking for qualified volunteers to join their patrols and respond to the increasing number of calls for assistance.

Originally named the ‘Maccabees’, Shmira was founded in 1964 by Rabbi Samuel Schrage with the goal of countering the rise of crime in the community.

In addition to responding to emergency calls and regular patrols, Shmira has grown into an organization that the community relies on to provide pedestrian safety during public events, including Siyum Sifrei Torah’s, Levayas and other similar events. Shmira also provides extra patrols in the neighborhood during special occasions such as the Kinus Hashluchim, Tishrei and C-Teen Shabbaton, serves as a community liaison to the Police Department, and much more.

In 2021, Shmira responded to:

• 500+ emergency calls, such as assaults in progress, home break-ins, car break-ins and property theft.
• 300+ non-emergency calls.
• 45+ special community events covered.
• 15,000+ hours of Marked Patrol logged.
