Judge Jane Okuo Kajuga of the Anti-Corruption Court has given Bududa Woman MP Agnes Nandutu two hours to prepare her defense in the Karamoja iron sheets case.
Nandutu has, on three occasions, evaded court on health grounds, telling the court that she is still undergoing treatment for an ailment causing difficulty in breathing and walking.
When she appeared in court today, her lawyers claimed they were not ready to proceed because they had not had time to discuss the case with her.
However, the judge insisted that they should prepare her within two hours, which means she is expected to take the witness stand at 1 p.m. to enable the presiding judge to determine whether she is in a position to defend herself.
According to Justice Kajuga, a medical report on record indicates that Nandutu can carry out her normal day-to-day activities, including speaking.
Last year, Justice Kajuga, basing her decision on evidence presented by David Bisamunyu, a prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, ruled that Nandutu — who is accused of dealing with 2,000 iron sheets from the Office of the Prime Minister — has a case to answer.
According to the prosecution, the iron sheets meant for the Karamoja Empowerment Programme were instead found at Nandutu’s farm in Bulwanyi, Mukono District, in 2022.
The Anti-Corruption Court now wants her to explain how the iron sheets ended up at her residence.
