An Indian-origin former researcher-turned-whistleblower at ChatGPT-maker OpenAI was found dead at his San Francisco apartment on November 26. Suchir Balaji’s death has been ruled as “suicide” by the police and medics. Officials added that they found no evidence of foul play in 26-year-old Artificial Intelligence techie’s death. Balaji worked at OpenAI between 2020 and 2024 and left the Microsoft-backed firm in August citing AI’s potential to harm society. He recently raised concerns about the alleged lack of ethics in AI’s development due to potential copyright breaches. Balaji added that AI models like ChatGPT “compete with copyrighted works they learn from” and that such technologies were damaging the internet. Billionaire Elon Musk has also reacted to Balaji’s death. The young techie’s sudden death has reignited the debate on the ethical side of Generative AI’s development.
