Betrayal of Trust: NYPD Covered Up Brutality Cases—Now the Truth is Out

NEW YORK CITY – The New York Police Department (NYPD) under Commissioner Edward Caban systematically buried cases of police brutality, shielding officers accused of choking, beating, and tasing civilians—and now the truth is finally coming to light.

From secret case dismissals to federal corruption investigations, the scandal has shaken the department and led to Caban’s shocking resignation after just over a year in office.

🚨 How did NYPD’s top cop get away with covering up brutality? And why was he forced out? Here’s what we now know.

Hundreds of Police Brutality Cases—Silenced by NYPD Leadership

For over a year, NYPD officers accused of violent misconduct never faced justice—not because they were innocent, but because Commissioner Edward Caban buried their cases before trials could even begin.

Using a little-known authority called “retention,” Caban personally blocked at least 54 officers from standing trial for brutality, including:

An officer caught on video choking a protester by grabbing her hair and slamming her to the ground.
A cop who shocked an unarmed man with a Taser FOUR TIMES while he tried to back away.
Officers who beat protesters with batons during the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an independent agency investigating police misconduct, had already determined that many of these officers likely committed crimes. But instead of facing discipline, some were even promoted.

🛑 One of the worst examples? The officer who brutally tackled and tased a protester was later appointed as Deputy Commissioner for Public Information—one of the NYPD’s highest-ranking positions.

The NYPD Tossed Out Over 400 Cases Without Review

🚨 It gets worse. NYPD leadership didn’t just block brutality trials—they quietly dismissed over 400 additional misconduct cases without even reviewing the evidence.

Many of these cases involved stop-and-frisks, racial profiling, and excessive force. Victims were never informed that their cases had been tossed aside.

🗣 “The NYPD is shutting down cases under the cloak of darkness,” said Florence Finkle, a former head of the CCRB.

Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams publicly promised “transparency” in police discipline—but instead, NYPD accountability has reached an all-time low.

Federal Investigation: Nightclub Corruption and Resignation

Caban’s downfall didn’t stop at police brutality cover-ups.

In September 2024, federal agents raided multiple locations, including Caban’s home, as part of a corruption probe into NYPD’s nightclub enforcement practices. Investigators seized his electronic devices while looking into reports that his brother, James Caban, was acting as a fixer for club owners seeking NYPD protection.

🛑 While Caban himself was not charged, the scandal forced his resignation, making him one of the shortest-serving commissioners in NYPD history.

In his place, former FBI official Tom Donlon was appointed as interim NYPD Commissioner—a sign that the department is now in full damage-control mode.

Will There Be Justice for Victims?

With Edward Caban gone, the big question remains:

🚨 Will the NYPD be forced to reopen cases of brutality that were buried under his leadership?

For the hundreds of victims denied justice, this moment could be a turning point—or another example of corrupt cops getting away with it.

The people of New York deserve accountability—but will they get it?
