Abuse of Power and Misunderstanding Biblical Text: 2 Samuel 11 12

We have been studying the life of Israel’s great king David for many months. We’ve watched his rise to the throne of all Israel, amazed at his faith in God through years of struggle. David is truly a man after God’s own heart.

But we’ve also seen the shadow side of David’s life in his lust for women. By the time David’s throne is established and he has secured Israel from neighboring threats, David has numerous wives and children. When he should have been satisfied, he is not.

In this video we study David’s horrible sin against one of his soldiers, Uriah, and Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba. My hunch is that not only have most of you heard this story many times before, but most of those previous sermons were delivered by men.

There is nothing wrong with men preaching about David’s sin. Men, in particular, struggle with lust, and it is very appropriate to learn how we men can battle and overcome lust, so that we don’t give into temptation like David did.

But there is a woman in this story. Her voice needs to be heard too. What must it have been like for Bathsheba? Too often Bathsheba’s experience in the story is quickly summarized so we can get to the prophet Nathan’s confrontation of David’s sin.

We need to pause and hear Bathsheba’s perspective. That’s why I am excited that Emily Marks is preaching the story of David and Bathsheba here. We, men especially, need to hear the female voice in the story.
