Today we have more tales to tell about the dark underside of some of our officers in blue, those bad apples that give the force and the profession a very bad name. These ego driven criminals disguised as peace officers who have sworn to serve and protect commit the most heinous crimes and these are made even worse because of the betrayal to not only the title they hold, but every citizen they are meant to protect often leaving so many of us wondering who then can we trust? This is how deep the damage can go.
The following officers have participated in crimes fromhe cold blooded murder to organized crime, have been caught, convicted, and given the consequence of their shocking actions.
First we have Wayne Jenkins. Jenkins had served as a police officer for more than ten years and at the time of his crimes, he was on the Baltimore, Maryland gun race task force. In this position, he was responsible for investigating violent crimes and illegal firearms trafficking. Jenkins behavior led to an investigation starting in 2015 after a tip to the FBI that members of Jenkins’ unit were committing robberies while on duty. This was just the tip of the iceberg. The investigation showed that not only robberies, but extortion, drug dealing, and planting evidence. As a final straw, an undercover FBI informant was robbed and this opened the door to the full extent of criminal activities. In 2017, Jenkins and six other cops were indicted on federal racketeering. This case is considered one of the most extensive corruption investigations in the history of Baltimore Police. Jenkins did plead guilty to a number of charges and because he was considered the ringleader, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison with no possiblity of parole. His corruption exposed some weak links in the system that have been modified and it is the hope of the department that the actions involving Jenkins will help the community heal and that his stiff sentence will act as a deterant for those cops who have the urge to feed their ego and power trips and greed and turn to the dark side.
