Punjab’s “Supercop” Kanwar Pal Singh Gill Gill – the most controversial IPS officer in Indian history. Known as both the “Supercop” and the “Butcher of Punjab”, Gill played a key role in ending Punjab militancy after Operation Blue Star and Indira Gandhi’s assassination. From leading Operation Black Thunder at the Golden Temple to being accused of fake encounters, police brutality, and even sexual harassment, his methods remain highly debated.

Despite the controversies, he became Punjab DGP twice and by 2000, was credited with eliminating terrorism from the state. This is Day 1 of our series – “Officers Who Changed India.”
